Jalapenos Grille (yes
it has an "e" at the end) is a new Mexican food restaurant adjacent to
California State University, Fullerton. Sasha and I arrived at the venue
not knowing what to expect. Not all Mexican food dining experiences are
the same; I mean, you've got Taco Bell, Del Taco, Chili's (is that Mexican
food), and countless family taquerias- all offering their version
of what Mexican food is. The laid back college atmosphere and open, clean
interior immediately put us at ease.
The menu looked typical: tacos, burritos,
quesadilla, tostadas, and tortas. The prices were in mid-range. The Chicken
Burrito Combo we decided on was $5.50 plus tax and a $1.99 medium soft
drink (isn't a 2-liter of coke a buck?). To amuse ourselves while our food
was being prepared, we munched on the tortilla chips that come with the
combo. The salsa bar only had two kinds of salsa, not bad, they were both
obviously fresh and homemade, but Rubio's Baja Grill has like, four.
They called our number, and the
hostess brought us our meal. Our combo included a nice helping of refried
beans and spanish rice. The burrito wasn't huge, but it was enough for
one person. It had beans, onions, cilantro, and of course chicken just
like the menu said it would, but nothing else. I guess I wanted some lettuce
and a handful of cheese or something. Sasha said that those kinds of items
have to requested. Oh. The beans and rice were nicely flavored and complimented
the burrito very well.
I turned my head towards the game
on one of the overhead televisions, and noticed the waitress bringing some
students a delicious looking sandwich made of a grilled roll with sliced
Carne Asada steak with lettuce and cheese. A torta ($4.59). How'd they
know to order that?
At the end of the meal, my stomach
was satisfied, but I was little bummed on spending $8 bucks for a meal
that didn't make me ridiculously full. As I was stepping out the door,
I noticed a bright yellow banner they had in their window, "Tacos $.99,
Saturdays and Sundays." That's what I like to hear, I'll be back.
Sunday, April 27th, 5:20pm
Three days later (Sunday), Sasha
and I were back in Jalapenos Grille for their $.99 cent tacos. They had
two choices, soft taco Carne Asada (Steak) and hard shell Chicken. I ordered
two chicken tacos and a side of beans ($.99). The tacos were probably the
best I had ever had. Seriously. They were filled with onions, big chunks
of seasoned grilled chicken, salsa that I scored from the salsa bar, and
yes, lettuce. The beans were covered with melted cheese and were equally
good. I was also given complimentary tortilla chips (which means everything).
For a little over $3.00 , I got a meal fit for any college student, at
a college students price. I'll be back next weekend for sure. |
